OOC;
I feel like I should actually clarify why I don’t have Garnet declaring her love for Zidane outright postgame, even though they are very clearly an implied couple throughout the course of IX and after (with that beautiful ending, who could say otherwise?). And be warned, this is totally my interpretation and it is a bundle of FEELINGS.
Simply put, I don’t find it to be in-character for her. Both Garnet and Zidane have an extremely hard time vocalizing their emotions throughout the game, particularly toward each other, and I feel like I should reflect that in my responses. As much as Zidane flirts from the get-go, he seriously struggles with vocalizing his feelings once they develop/once Garnet becomes queen (and we certainly see that when he is moaning and groaning in the tavern after the events of the Iifa tree). It isn’t until the very end of the game that he can openly acknowledge how much Garnet means to him, and even then, it isn’t with “I love you”s. Garnet is just as emotionally constipated. She can’t even bring herself to admit how she feels about Zidane to others the way Zidane can, much less to Zidane himself.
The way they do express their emotions with one another is really channeled through their character development. They both can freely admit that the other has changed their lives for the better. They do articulate that they could never have grown into the people they’ve become if not for one another. To me, that speaks volumes.
In other words, it’s not that I don’t see them as a couple, because I do. I just see them as essentially being past an open relationship. They are “together”, but they don’t act out the conventional roles as a “couple” publicly, just as they never did in FFIX. They never say that they love each other to one another. That’s okay, because the ending articulates it just fine:
“How did you survive?”
“I didn’t have a choice. I had to live. I wanted to come home to you. So… I sang your song. Our song.”
I think I can see Zidane being open about it post-game, but I feel like Garnet has a bit more of a difficult time doing the same! Which is why she has behaved the way she has thusfar.
Of course, for the purposes of this blog, I think it would be fun to challenge Garnet, which is why I may actually end up addressing it the way the Ask Zidane blog did. ;)
